Conversations about Diabetes, COVID, and Living a Sparked Life

Lifesprk’s Diabetes Awareness Campaign

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month but given that one in four adults (26.8%) age 65 and older has type 2 diabetes, Lifesprk is devoting the next three months to diabetes awareness and education.

There’s another, even more urgent reason we’re focusing on this chronic condition: COVID-19. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), people with type 2 diabetes are at greater risk of becoming severely ill from coronavirus. On the flip side, adults who are able to control their blood sugars and are otherwise healthy tend to have better outcomes if they do get COVID-19.

Small Changes Add Up

A diagnosis of diabetes might initially feel overwhelming. But the good news is that diabetes doesn’t have to limit your life. Lifesprk’s physicians, nurse practitioners, and registered dietitian are experts in helping clients learn manageable ways to manage their diabetes. “The key is moderation, not deprivation,” says Lifesprk’s registered dietician JoAnna Weinand, RD. “By making small changes over time, you can stay on top of your diabetes and still enjoy a full life.”

Individualized Approach

Of course, what works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for another, especially as we age. “For example, acceptable blood glucose levels for seniors often need to be higher to reduce the risk of falls,” says Lifesprk’s Associate Medical Director, Sarah Johnson, APRN, CNP. “Your Lifesprk primary care provider will work closely with you to set the right level based on your individual needs and goals.”

Similarly, Lifesprk’s whole-person approach encompasses all aspects of your life, not just your medications, medical conditions, or health history. Equally important are your favorite activities and hobbies, social connections, family support, mobility, living situation, mental health, sense of purpose, and more. In other words, diabetes is not who you are.
